The maternal mortality and morbidity rate is disproportionately high for black women in the United States. We take this problem seriously and strive to be a part of the solution. While we do not think that yoga is THE solution, we believe that yoga can be a crucial part of a system of support for improving the health and well-being of pregnant and postpartum people. However, yoga isn’t accessible to all, especially people of color. The majority of yoga teachers and yoga practitioners in the United States are predominantly white-presenting Americans. We would like to see more yoga teachers of color in the yoga industry.
Poppy Perinatal Yoga is in the process of forming a non-profit to offer tuition scholarships to people of color, including professional and aspiring yoga teachers and birthworkers. Our extensive scholarship program will be offering significantly more than the typical 1 or 2 scholarship spots. Please stay tuned for complete information coming soon.
